チル

Taken directly from the English word 'chill.' Used as 'chiru suru' (to chill / hang out doing nothing) and 'chirui' (chill vibes / relaxed atmosphere). Think sipping coffee at a cafe, listening to lo-fi beats, or just doing absolutely nothing on purpose. Spread mainly among Gen Z in the 2020s. Also works as an adjective: 'chirui kyoku' (a chill song), 'chiru na kuukan' (a chill space). Unlike the English usage, it rarely means 'to calm down after being upset' — it's almost always about intentional, pleasant relaxation.
