A youth slang term derived from the English word "emotional." Some trace its spread to the American rock genre "emo" (emotional hardcore / emocore) — a style known for its blend of intensity and melancholy — which eventually outgrew its musical origins and became a general-purpose adjective in Japanese. It describes anything that stirs deep feelings: a nostalgic photo, a bittersweet song, a sunset that hits just right.
